Environmental Compliance & Certifications Overview

At TechHaulers, responsible recycling isn't just a tagline — it's the foundation of everything we do. We follow industry-leading standards and compliance frameworks to ensure your electronics are handled safely, securely, and sustainably.

Industry Standards We Follow

R2 (Responsible Recycling)

R2 is the leading certification standard for electronics recyclers, developed by Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI). It covers:

  • Environmental responsibility — Proper handling and disposition of all materials
  • Data security — Protocols for data-bearing devices
  • Health and safety — Worker protection standards
  • Downstream accountability — Tracking where materials go after processing
  • Legal compliance — Adherence to all applicable environmental laws

TechHaulers follows R2v3 protocols across all our operations, including chain of custody tracking, downstream vendor management, and environmental controls.

e-Stewards

The e-Stewards standard, managed by the Basel Action Network (BAN), is the strictest certification for electronics recyclers. Key principles include:

  • No export of hazardous eWaste to developing countries
  • No landfilling or incineration of toxic eWaste
  • Certified data destruction processes
  • Full transparency in downstream material handling

TechHaulers is committed to these principles. We process everything domestically and maintain a 100% landfill diversion rate — nothing we handle ends up in a landfill.

NIST 800-88 (Data Sanitization)

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication 800-88 is the gold standard for media sanitization. It defines three levels of data destruction:

  • Clear — Logical techniques to sanitize data (basic overwrite)
  • Purge — Physical or logical techniques that make data recovery infeasible (degaussing, cryptographic erase)
  • Destroy — Physical destruction rendering the media unusable (shredding, disintegration)

TechHaulers follows NIST 800-88 guidelines for all data destruction services. Every device undergoes documented sanitization, and you receive a Certificate of Destruction as proof.

IEEE 2883-2022 (Storage Media Sanitization)

IEEE 2883-2022 is the newest standard for storage media sanitization, expanding on NIST 800-88 with updated guidance for modern storage technologies including:

  • Solid-state drives (SSDs) and NVMe devices
  • Flash-based storage media
  • Hybrid drives
  • Modern enterprise storage arrays

TechHaulers incorporates IEEE 2883 protocols to ensure proper sanitization of all storage media types, including newer technologies that traditional methods may not fully address.

Our Commitment to Compliance

TechHaulers follows these certification frameworks across every aspect of our operations:

  • Chain of custody tracking from pickup to final disposition
  • 100% landfill diversion — everything is recycled, refurbished, or sent to an appropriate processor
  • Domestic processing only — no overseas dumping of hazardous materials
  • Documented data destruction with certificates provided
  • Worker safety protections throughout our facility
  • Precious metals recovery — gold, silver, copper, and palladium extracted responsibly

Certifications for Your Records

For every pickup and data destruction job, TechHaulers provides:

  • Certificate of Destruction — Proof that your data-bearing devices were sanitized per NIST 800-88 guidelines
  • Chain of Custody documentation — Tracking from your location through our processing facility
  • Asset inventory reports — Itemized list of all equipment received (for ITAD clients)

These documents support your organization's compliance, audit, and ESG reporting requirements.
