Data Destruction Standards — NIST 800-88 Compliance

Our Data Destruction Process

TechHaulers follows NIST Special Publication 800-88 Rev. 1 guidelines for media sanitization. This ensures all data on devices we process is permanently and irreversibly destroyed.

Three Levels of Sanitization

  • Clear — Logical techniques to sanitize data (overwriting). Used for devices being refurbished for resale.
  • Purge — Physical or logical techniques that render data recovery infeasible. Used for enterprise ITAD clients.
  • Destroy — Physical destruction rendering the media unusable. Our grinding process goes beyond NIST Destroy requirements.

Our Process

  1. Intake & Chain of Custody — Every device is logged into our tracking system at intake with serial numbers, make, model, and condition.
  2. Data Security Assessment — We evaluate the appropriate sanitization level based on the device type and your security requirements.
  3. Sanitization — Devices are sanitized per NIST 800-88 using certified software tools or physical destruction.
  4. Verification — Each device is verified post-sanitization. Physical destruction is documented with before/after photographs.
  5. Certificate of Destruction — A signed Certificate of Destruction is issued via Zoho Sign, documenting every device processed.

What You Receive

  • Signed Certificate of Destruction (digital, via Zoho Sign)
  • Chain of Custody manifest with serial numbers
  • Processing summary with device counts and destruction method used
